FKWR has a modest sized rehabilitation facility where there are aviaries for housing sick and injured birds, flight cages and sanctuaries, and regular and intensive care care facilities including diagnostic and remedial capabilities in the bird hospital. Many of the birds rescued are listed as endangered, threatened or species of special concern - the majority of which suffer fishing-related injuries because of human thoughtlessness and carelessness. Educating the public about a clean environment is crucial. Toxins, pollutants and general littering are harmful and oftentimes fatal to the wildlife in the Keys. FKWR provides informal educational opportunities (during a bird rescue with passerby's), formal educational opportunities (programs at RV parks, marinas, etc) as well as facilitating trash clean-up days. FKWR's educational outreach program is interactive-based, allowing school children to actively participate with the material being presented. This organization exists as a direct result of environmental degradation caused by humans. Their implementation of extensive environmental education programs have been seen by BOy and GIrl Scouts, YMCA groups and visiting school groups from around the country. |
